to adorn your neck.

It's finally getting a bit cooler in Charleston (and by cooler I mean in the 80's) so all I've been thinking about is a new fall wardrobe. Unfortunately I can't justify spending money on a new fall wardrobe (probably has something to do with a fabulous trip I'm about to embark on).
While I can't afford a new wardrobe - I can afford one fabulous statement necklace.
Now the problem... which one to choose???
amore necklace - $49.99

So what do you think? Do you love any? Are there any others out there I should be considering?

a world not born until you arrive.

'Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and its only by this meeting that a new world is born.'
-Anais Nin

I've been thinking about the people in my life lately; the majoriy of who are fabulous and enrich my life for the better. But there are also people, friends actually, who have let the friendship wane for one reason or another. Now I'll be the first to admit that I'm not perfect when it comes to relationships and friendships but it's sad when you realize you've put forth effort for very little in return. And suddenly you realize you're exerting too much energy and you just stop. And when you stop, the friendship stalls and will soon cease to exist all together. You become acquaintances, say the occasional hello and goodbye, and keep moving through your day.
I'm sure this happens to everyone. All friendships aren't meant to last. There's a quote, which I can't find right now, but it speaks about how not all relationships are novels. Some are simply chapters. I think I'm realizing that some people that I thought were novels... are chapters. And I'm okay with that.

No matter if someone is a novel or a chapter - they've shaped me and gotten me where I am today. And for that I am grateful.

closing out september right.

What a weekend! Guy and I had so much fun with our friend Maggie who was in town for the week. We ate our way through Charleston restaurants and are all 5 pounds heavier (and happier!)
{Friday night at Rue de Jean}

{Guy & Mags}

{Sunday brunch at Fat Hen}

{the BEST bloody marys}

{Nate's shrimp 'n grits}

{creme brulee french toast}

{Maggie, Allison, and Leslie}

{Nate, Maggie, and I}

So after eating my face off this weekend... I'm on a serious food detox. (After tonight - I have one more dinner out to celebrate my dad's birthday!)
Hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

where is fall??(and happy weekend!)

{via}
Does anyone have fall weather yet?? It's 90 today and I'm getting real tired of sweating my ass off between the 10 yard walk from my car to my office building. Where is the 70 degree weather?? Hell... 80's at this point would be refreshing.
But I digress.... the weekend will not be about complaining over the weather... it will be about celebrating the fact that my sweet Maggie is in town!!! We already have lots of plans - watching football, dinner at her favorite French restaurant, dinner at a friend's house, Boardwalk Empire viewing party, and much more.
Hope you all have something fun planned for your weekend!
And if you have fall weather.... enjoy it for me!

civic duty calls.

Yup, that's right. My name was called for jury duty.
Notsohappy.
I'm hoping for something along the lines of Runaway Jury.....

but I know I'm going to get this instead.

See you tomorrow!

recipe: crispy fish tacos

Sunday night Guy knew exactly what he wanted to make:
Tyler Florence's Crispy Fish Tacos
Thank goodness for my Guy... always keeping me happy & full.
He said they were super easy to make. I wouldn't know because I was busy catching up on my People magazines.
Anyways... back to the recipe.
{Guy kept it simple and delicious with cabbage and tomatos}
{the key to frying? Panko breadcrumbs}
{Make sure to use a meaty fish. We used Halibut}
The end product; so delicious. The secret is in the pink chili mayo sauce. (also in the recipe linked above}

WARNING: your house will smell like fried fish for at least two days. Fry with caution.

Hope you try and enjoy! This will be one of our new standby's. Next time, of course, will fry with all the windows open!

no one should be THIS excited for TV.

But I am. REALLY excited.
I'm excited enough where I was close to doing a countdown to my favorite shows....but didn't.
While I'm excited for many, there are four that consistently creep into my head and mess with my work productivity.
1. Dexter
Best. Show. On. Television
Guy and I just added Showtime for $11/month solely for the purpose of this season of Dexter.
You could call it an obsession.
2. Modern Family
My other favorite television show.
You'll find me quoting lines from the show until the next episode airs.
Love it.
3. Boardwalk Empire
New show on HBO. Started Sunday night.
I'm intrigued....
I needed something to replace True Blood on Sunday night
4. Glee
GLEE! If you're not watching, you should. It's one of the smartest scripts on television.
You should watch for Sue Sylvester's one liners alone.

Okay friends.... are you anything like me? Any shows you're looking forward too?
Happy Tuesday!

waiting for superman.

Have ya'll heard about the documentary Waiting for "Superman"?
Before I write about it.... look at this statistic:

Among 30 developed countries, our students rank 25th in math and 21st in science.

Seriously?! The country with the most wealth is producing an education system where our children are 25th and 21st. Our kids aren't getting more stupid than we were so what gives?

Davis Guggenheim and Bill Gates thinks our school system is failing our children. They've created a documentary to prove those claims.
And I can't wait to see it.
Just the idea of students being put into a lottery system to decide whether or not they get to go to school is sickening. Watch the trailer here and tell me you're not moved.
Oh, and if you buy tickets, buy them from their website. If you do, you get to give $15 dollars to a classroom of your choice!

So what do you think? Had you heard about this documentary?
Are you going to see Waiting for "Superman"?

Guy and I had a perfect night on Seabrook and Kiawah islands Friday night. We started the night at Guy's brothers house for a little family time with his adorable niece Kate.
Here they're dancing with her 'pat pat'
{Have you ever tried to get a two year old to cooperate on a photo opp?}
{If not, this is what you get!}
After a few cocktails and family time, we got ready to head to the Ocean Room for dinner.
The night was perfect for a few photos so we couldn't resist.
{Smile Kate! Say Cheese! Look at the camera!}
{Guy, me, Heidi, & Steve}

I of course, being a good blogger, took pictures of the FANTASTIC meal we ate.
When I was reviewing them yesterday... I realized all that mattered were the truffle oil fries.
They were incredible. I wanted to pocket the few that were left but had no pockets and Guy wasn't having any of it.

Nights like Friday night remind me what a blessed life I live. I'm one lucky girl.
Hope you all enjoyed your weekend!

tgi friday!

hWhoa! What a busy week. Between travel, trainings, bootcamp and other work obligations - I haven't had time to do anything! Thankfully I have a food filled, relaxing weekend ahead.
First up, The Ocean Room at Kiawah Island.
This is an amazing four star restaurant that would normally be out of my & G's price range but it's Restaurant Week in Charleston so we're taking full advantage! I can't wait to eat and drink my little heart out.
Next on our agenda is a Saturday morning bike ride on Seabrook Island and an afternoon Badger game at Red's Ice House.
{Sign me up for some brews, nachos, and lots of football!}
Our weekend wraps up with a baptism for our good family friends Seth, Whitney, and sweet Brady followed by brunch at High Cotton.
{Bloody's with okra and biscuits & gravy here I come!}

In other news.... Guy and I watched Forgetting Sarah Marshall last night.
Um, how did I miss this previously?
So funny!
Wishing you all an amazing weekend! Can't wait to hear what you do.

deep thoughts

Deep Thoughts with Jack Handy Morgan
Actually... not deep but just something to think about. My bootcamp instructor, who really doubles as a life coach, mentioned something to me this morning that really hit home. I think she noticed that I was going through the motions but wasn't really 'there.' She mentioned that the present is all we have. We don't have the past or the future. It hit home immediately.
The past is something we often think about but no one really remembers. The memories start to fade, you warp the other memories to fit what you want to remember... and mostly we look to the past to think about things we regret, fear, or worry about.
The future is something we don't have, yet we think about it all the time. We anticipate what's to come but there's no assurity it ever will.
This might mean nothing to you but it hit home for me. I don't live in the present. I'm constantly in the past or future. Even driving home from bootcamp, after Lyn told me this, I was thinking not about the cool breeze coming through the car or the song I was enjoying on the radio - I was thinking about how I was going to get everything done today that I needed to do.
Bottom line.
 Be present.
It's all we've got.

my pre workout routine.

I started bootcamp this morning.
I used to do bootcamp religiously.
But then I quit, practiced the deadly sin of sloth for two months, and now need to get my ass back in shape.
Naturally I ate these last night in preparation.
I'm smart.

can you pack too many shoes?

Alright ladies.
If you were going to Italy for 10 days, and the weather is in the 60's, how many pair of shoes would you pack?
This is my current struggle.
Please help.
And while you're thinking... drool over this shoe collection.
This woman has over 60 pair of nude/gold shoes. I counted.
Amazing.....

pop a top on it.

This might be the best find ever.
A Wendy's training video from the 90's.
This is legit.
Watch and enjoy!

drollgirl - this is for you!
Hope everyone enjoys their weekend! I'm heading to a rehearsal dinner tonight, wedding tomorrow night, and dinner Sunday night. I'm going to need another weekend after this weekend!

recipe: okra fritters

Okra?
Yes please.
Buttermilk?
Need you ask.
Frying?
Sign a sister up.

I'm talking okra fritters people. Ohhhhhh yeah. They're as good as they sound. Yes again my Everyday Food pulls through for me.
Cut your okra, add flour, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1/4 teaspoon of pepper. Add diced onion. Mix buttermilk, and one egg to the mixture.
Fry those puppies up.
Key tip! Flatten them immediately after you drop them in the oil. We ruined an entire batch by forgeting to do this.
Remove from oil, pat with paper towl, salt to taste, and enjoy!
And I couldn't have the salty without the sweet so I whipped up some cookies (from scratch, without a recipe natch).
Oh yeah, and there was some pork in there but that's not so exciting.
All in all - a great meal night at the M&G household!
Hope you all had a nice Wednesday evening! Happy Thursday!
xoxo
