waiting for superman.

Have ya'll heard about the documentary Waiting for "Superman"?
Before I write about it.... look at this statistic:

Among 30 developed countries, our students rank 25th in math and 21st in science.

Seriously?! The country with the most wealth is producing an education system where our children are 25th and 21st. Our kids aren't getting more stupid than we were so what gives?

Davis Guggenheim and Bill Gates thinks our school system is failing our children. They've created a documentary to prove those claims.
And I can't wait to see it.
Just the idea of students being put into a lottery system to decide whether or not they get to go to school is sickening. Watch the trailer here and tell me you're not moved.
Oh, and if you buy tickets, buy them from their website. If you do, you get to give $15 dollars to a classroom of your choice!

So what do you think? Had you heard about this documentary?
Are you going to see Waiting for "Superman"?

It's all the rage among my teacher friends! I've been hearing all kinds of buzz about it, and I think a theater in SF was even giving teachers free admission for a while! I'm excited to see it . . . though I am sure it will just make me feel worse about the horrors I already know exist in our education system. Goodness.

wow, just watched the trailer! What is that lottery system all about?...is it to be put into a "better" school then the one they already are in?

Haven't heard of this... but I am intrigued.

And I have now caught up on Seasons 1 AND 2 of True Blood. I am beyond addicted. But why can't Bill and Sookie be together?!?!? She should've just said yes right away last season when he proposed. They better end up together. It actually makes me mad they're not...

the lottery system is for students to get into a charter school. The charter schools in those students areas are the only good schools and they know if they don't get into one they're future is basically shot. its so sad. i cried from the trailor. every child no matter where they come from or where they live or what socio economic level they're at should have the best education there is.

I haven't heard of it - but sitting here on my kitchen table next to me is the latest issue of Maclean's magazine (thing the Newsweek of Canada) and Bill Gates is on the cover and it says inside is an exclusive interview. I am interested in reading it, although, lately Maclean's has been a bit too harsh on Americans...
