really spirit airlines? REALLY?

Did you hear the news? The genius idea from Spirit Airlines?
Come August 1st, they'll be charging $45 per carry on bag in the overhead compartment.
I can't think of a more "damned if you don't, damned if you do" situation. No one checks bags anymore because you have to pay through the nose and now we're going to have to pay to have luggage on the plane at all. SERIOUSLY? What's next? $5 to use the bathroom? $.50 per arm rest? Or $10 to speak to the flight attendant? I wouldn't put it past the airlines.
As someone that travels almost weekly, this clearly annoys me. Because of all these stupid fees - we're all going to have to FedEx our luggage in the near future. Hell, it's cheaper. Why not stimulate that business and not the fledgling airlines.
The silver lining here is only Spirit Airlines is charging this fee. For now.
So whay say you, dear readers? Is this justified? Would you pack less to avoid the fee?

This really bothers me too! The airlines will continue to lose money because people will rather drive.

Shipping your luggage (especially if you're going to be staying with relatives anyway) it's a bad idea. This idea of charging to bring luggage on board is just ridiculous!

Completely insane! Are they charging for bags that will fit under seats, too, or just if you use the overhead? Then, how do they charge? When you check in? And, what happens if the overheads fill up, and you have to do the planeside check thing? Does the $45 apply there, too? It seems like it would have been easier for Spirit to up their fares $45 rather than try to manage this insanity. STUPID. I'd rather stay home...

I was peeved at this too. Just another con way to make money. Ugh. Thank God it's only Spirit, and I have NEVER flown them, and I definitely won't EVER be now! Let's hope other airlines are smart enough to not follow suit.

Wow, this is just rediculous. Nickel and diming us for every last cent we earn!! I would definitely never fly this airline, I hope others do NOT follow in their footsteps!

Completely ridiculous... my friend Sarah and I were just talking about this and I get that airlines are struggling and they need to increase profits... but I would rather just pay more for my ticket and have the costs built into that than having to pay separately for luggage and lunch and earphones and blankets... just makes me angry. Granted, I don't fly often because I'm terrified of it, but when I do... UGH.

This is infuriating! First they take away free meals on the plane, then they charge for checked luggage, and now this?!?! Before we know it, we're all gonna be homebound cause we can't afford to go anywhere! Geez!

I might be the ONLY one who has a "kind word" for the airlines on this issue. Having made several fairly long flights recently, I totally "get" why they are charging for carry-on bags. B/c of the charges for checking, people have tried to CRAM a week's worth of supplies/clothing into their carry-on luggage and it is insane. I saw people trying to cram BIG suitcases into the overhead bins. I also had a friend relay an incident on a flight she was on where stuff came OUT of the bin b/c it was too full (so it did not close correctly). I agree that there might be a better solution (like policing the size and number of carry-ons, but people would rail against that as well. One person said that they should charge what it costs and I tend to agree with that. Apparently the manipulation with $$ isn't working too well and they seem to be just doing knee-jerk reactions to customer behavior rather than really sitting down and figuring out a long-term solution. But I have to say I see, at least in part, their side of this story.

That is seriously lame! I hate how all of the travel expenses start adding up.
