choose local.

The recession has affected us all one way or another but I’ve never noticed it more in my town than recently. Right before I left for vacation, a few of my favorite local spots closed suddenly. I don’t think it sunk in until now how drastic the changes have been. In one little area we lost our local video store, ice cream shop, shoe boutique, children’s shop, and local bar. All within a month of each other. Devastating.

Fast forward to last weekend…. Guy and I were craving Italian and love Carrabba’s so decided we would head there for some chicken parm. We were about to leave the house when Guy turned to me and suggested we support a local Italian spot instead. One we like but for some reason often choose the chain restaurant instead. I immediately agreed and we had a nice dinner. What made it even nicer was you could tell the owner really appreciated our business. It cost us a few bucks more but I’m sure those dollars will be better spent with a local business versus a chain.

I’m not quite sure why I’m telling you about this… I just feel we could all do more to support our local businesses. If each of us choose local just once in the month of December, we’ll make a difference.

Here Here! I used to be scared of my local hole-in-the-wall places, but now if it doesn't have chipping paint and a menu full of misspellings, it just doesn't feel right. :)

I totally agree too! I would hate for all of my stores to go under because I am not supporting them enough. I think I will go Christmas shopping at smaller shops instead of the larger ones to help them out a bit. ;)

Yum! You're making me crave italian. We have a favorite local spot too. I love spending my money there versus a chain (unless its outback and no one can top their salad and bread...)

I agree, and I've tried to do this for the wedding as well. I've tried to pick vendors that work independently rather than bigger "chains". I feel you get better service b/c they need the business more. Plus a lot of them like my florist work out of their house which keeps the overhead low and therefore they have lower prices as well.

I completely agree! Im seeing so many great places closing! I guess it's true that you don't realize what you have until it's gone....

I was in Mt. P yesterday & was really sad to learn that Ice Creams & Coffee Beans had closed up & been replaced by another ice cream store. I don't know if you've ever heard of them or not, but they're my favorite!!! I sure hope they didn't close up for economy reasons! (Then again, it's been so long since I've been there, that they could've closed up 5 years ago & I wouldn't know it.)

I completely agree. It's so sad how all of these "Ma and Pop" stores are going out of business because of the monopolies larger scale chain stores put on business. Really sad.
