working your dream job

I’ve been thinking a lot about careers lately. My own career is going through some slight changes which is always scary and exciting at the same time. Most of us, myself included, are thankful for the job/career we have (now more than ever) but are you working in your dream job? I hope the answer is yes… but my guess most people would answer no. Are you in the industry you thought you’d be in when you were in high school/college?
When thinking about these questions…. I realized there were three professions I thought I might land in… none of which I did… but that doesn’t mean I’m not heading in that direction. Or maybe, just maybe, those actually aren’t right for me and where I am is right? I’m still figuring these questions out.
The first career I seriously thought about was being a lawyer. I loved my Mock Trial team in high school and was pretty good at it. I’ve always liked taking on a topic, debating the facts, and hopefully coming out on top. There’s also something exciting about the idea of being in court defending your client, industry, or what have you. I also think A Time to Kill had something to do with this dream. Remember that movie? I wanted to be Matthew Mcconaughey’s character BAD. Next up, I LOVE the idea of being a buyer for a department store. On the surface it looks great. I like to shop. I have decent taste. That’s all the job takes right? Ha. No, I’m not that dumb but it sounds kind of glamorous and fun. Any of you out there that are actual buyers can burst my bubble any time now.
Finally… as you may guess from my ‘Thursday Cuteness’ posts…. I love animals and love nonprofit organizations. This is where I truly thought I would end up. I did internships with nonprofits during college, have always volunteered, and now work for a company that directly works with nonprofits organizations. I love the idea that my day to day tasks in my job could directly help someone or something… which is exactly what nonprofit organizations do. They aren’t the most glamorous or well paid careers but they sure are needed and necessary. What career did you think you were going to do when you were in high school or college?

1. I loved that movie, "A Time To Kill"...gets me everytime!!

And I'm def not in my dream job. I'm actually with you on the nonprofit side. I'm doing marketing and PR, which is something I do want to do, but I'd rather be doing it for a nonprofit than who I am working for now.

ANd in high school, I totally wanted to be a dentist...wanted to make everyone's smile perfect. That dream can to an abrupt stop when i realized I was no good at Science:)

I thought I'd be an astronaut. That is, until I realized I hate math. It hates me. And I have to count on my fingers.

I thought I was going to be an attorney. I worked in the legal field a few years after college and took the LSAT shortly before I got married. But, then we ended up getting preggers a few months in...and the rest is history. : )

This post reallllly means a lot to me, because, I as well am going through maaaany changes in my career. I will be doing a post on it eventually. But I can totally relate. I am working the the same industry that I always thought I would end up am... this doesn't mean I am happy, and it doesn't mean I am doing exactly what I want to be doing. So, I am taking some big chances and hoping they pay off! Just remember... always do what makes you happen, even if its not what you thought!

First of all, those kitties in the teacups are way too cute.
As for dream jobs... I think I might actually get to say I have mine next year. I honestly have wanted to be a little lawyer since I was little. The school part is definitely not fun, but I know it will all be worth it in the end... And although I don't really want to be a litigator, who doesn't want their day in court, to press Jack Nicholson on the stand and demand the truth, or deliver a closing argument a la Sam Watterson in Law and Order? Hee hee...

Oooh les mignons! Adorable little kitties!
In high school I wanted to be an architect or a photo journalist so in some ways things have come full circle. In nursery school I wanted to be a princess... still waiting on that one. :)

O wow, I wanted to be a flight attendant or open up a restaurant in the city.

that kitten picture is hilarious.

I wanted to be a vet (one that didn't have to put animals to sleep), a mommy, or a writer for a glossy magazine. I definitely did not see my life looking like it does.

This is great! :)
Well, I thought I'd be an archaeologist. Then I thought that would be no life for someone who might eventually be married and want children.
Flash forward to now. I'm not married, or even close to being engaged. Add to which, I'm no longer sure I want children.
There's something to be said for gut instincts. ;)
